    I don't really get this. Surely the quickest "quake done quick" is just going to be the aggregation of all the current level records stitched together. Some of the level runs in this video might be great, but unless they are the world record for that level, there is going to be something out there even greater.

    • @quakespeedrunsexplained
      @quakespeedrunsexplained 6 дней назад

      Individual level records all start with just the shotgun and limited ammo. In QDQ projects the levels are stitched together and stats (weapons, armour, health, etc) are carried over from the previous level, opening up a huge amount of possibilities. Many of these QDQ runs (especially on later levels) are 30+ seconds faster than the single-level records!

    A bit surprised you didn't mention that Chambers did one less bunny before rocket-jumping to that teleporter! 😀 Quite incredible that a full second was shaved off of that already awesome-looking run. Edit: as I'm quite late to comment on this, I see now that someone (not Chambers) has done 0:15 in the ER! I can't wait for your video on that one. :)

  • @lifesnotfair

    What an insightful video, loved the way you edited this. I was just reading Daniel M.'s comment below, about the "mindset" (not sure which he words he used even though I just read it, haha!), and he's absolutely right. I think a lot of patience is needed for these type of runs, and in fact, I used to feel this even for single-level runs! I always prefered runs, or Easy 100%s or some Nightmare 100%s that didn't involve many (or any!) "luck-dependant" trick. I absolutely hated to have a "perfect looking" run being ended by some random monster movement that never happened before, or because a monster didn't cooperate the way I needed it to, which is why I almost never even tried a longer run. As Daniel said, the thought of having a fairly long run being ruined because of trying a trick (near the end of it) that saves a few seconds.... it was just not worth it to me! I'd rather be slower but have success more often (in marathons)! But obviously that way of thinking wont lead to great records. I guess noone knows this but back in about 2001 I really liked playing episode 3 Easy 100%, and I managed to beat Marlo's 9:16, and was playing to shave some more few seconds off when someone told me (I think through the mIRC channel) that Martin Selinus had submitted an 8:42, so I said "screw it, Martin is just better", which he definitely was, specially in 2001 (I was far from my best in 2001). But I do remember back then the records were far from being "polished" as they are now. For example I held the episode 1 Easy 100% with an absolutely disastrous e1m3 run.. I kept telling myself "I know marathon runs wont match single-level times, but I can't be 20+ seconds slower than the single-level record!!!". I was always intimidated by e1m3 and was always so catious running that map... This sounds like ancient history now but Daniel M.'s comment just brought back memories of me thinking the exact same thing he just said! It is amazing to me to watch these new generation of players include what we once considered "very hard tricks", all done one after the other in a bloody Marathon run! Just WOW. Huge congratulations to all these players who run through the game so courageously.

    What an amazing video you've made here. To those of us who tried speedrunning back in those days, it brings back sooo many memories! I used to love doing the entire episode 1 Easy 100% and at one point even held the record (which would be terrible nowdays), and I must say e1m6 EH was one of my favourite runs of the entire map. Seeing you explain everything in such detail was truly a pleasure. One thing I am not sure still: why exactly do you fall faster after schooting the 3 scrags? You seem to take no damage, so... why? I'm geniuinely curious. A couple of years ago I installed Quake again (after like a 15 year hiatus) and found these "power bunnies" technique to be, as you called it, a Nightmare to learn. Quickly gave up on it :) It is truly a joy to watch you explain these runs in such detail, and I can only wish those who are new to the game, or those who haven't ever been able to play it at a decently high level, can comprehend some of the stuff you say. It all feels very nostalgic to me if i'm being honest. Please keep these kind of videos coming, we all absolutely love them! Cheers. -Arturo

    • @quakespeedrunsexplained
      @quakespeedrunsexplained 9 дней назад

      Thanks Arturo, I still remember a lot of your "classic" demos :) As for the fall on e1m6, it was just a matter of 'curling' off the ledge as soon as possible, I don't actually 'fall' faster, I just start the drop down earlier, if that makes sense...

    • @lifesnotfair
      @lifesnotfair 9 дней назад

      @@quakespeedrunsexplained Thanks for the clarification! It does make sense, yes, I was just making sure there was nothing else that I'd be "missing", :D Like I said, I hope you can keep making these videos because they are truly awesome. 👏👏

    I liked it, regardless of any feared self-indulgence. Your video concept was interesting for a reason I find Karl Jobst's similar content interesting - beating one of your old WRs is historical, on top of the regular fun of seeing a run broken down into each fractional time-save. I like your speedrun analyses in general, and this one has that extra spice from its backstory.
